This chair is a companion through childhood. As the child grows the chair diminishes. The notches on the legs indicate each stage of the chair. So when you feel the time is right, you can saw off what is not needed any more.

Born in 1973, in Berkhout, the Netherlands, Maartje Steenkamp studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Dijon, France (1997), and later at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (2001). She started her studio SMS in 2002 in Haarlem where she continues to live and work.
Highchair was part of her final exams at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and became part of the Droog collection. The prototypes of the four stages of the Highcair are in the collection of the Central Museum Utrecht, and her work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Textile Museum Tilburg, and Kunsthal Rotterdam, amongst others.
The leading question in Steenkamp`s work concerns movement—what, how and why does movement affect men and his surroundings?
